The World Health Organization (WHO) strives to promote yoga to create better health in society.

Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO regional director for Southeast Asia, said yoga can be practiced at any age and the only requirement is a commitment to better health and a willingness to gently stretch, exercise and invigorate the body and mind.

“It can help children get the 60 minutes of daily activity necessary for a life of good health. It can help adults achieve the 150 minute weekly activity required to fight off non-communicable diseases. For people aged 65 and over, it can help reduce the risk of depression and maintain cognitive functions, ”she said in a statement on International Yoga Day on Tuesday. .

This year's International Day of Yoga established a critical link between healthy lifestyles, physical activity, and individual and public health.

According to the WHO, non-communicable diseases cause an estimated 8.5 million deaths in the Southeast Asia region each year. Many of the deaths are premature and almost all of them are lifestyle related. Around 70 percent of boys and 80 percent of girls in the region report insufficient physical activity.

Khetrapal Singh said finding time to exercise could be challenging, but it was fundamental to lifelong health and wellbeing.

“The 5000 year old yoga practice is considered an effective way to increase strength and flexibility, improve cardio fitness, burn calories and relax the mind. It is also known to help cultivate routine and integrate physical activity into everyday life. "(Ebf)
