Your daily yoga routine can improve sperm quality and fertility | Health

For men struggling with infertility, the solution could be as simple as a daily yoga routine. A new study from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) shows that such a routine can significantly improve sperm quality. The study was published earlier this year in Nature Review Urology, an international medical journal.

One of the main causes of abnormal sperm function is DNA damage. "The quality of the genetic components in the sperm is of crucial importance for the birth of healthy offspring," said Dr. Rima Dada, professor in charge of the Laboratory for Molecular Reproduction and Genetics of the Department of Anatomy at AIIMS.

The main cause of DNA damage is oxidative stress, which is an imbalance between the levels of free radicals and the anti-oxygen capacity in the body. Oxidative stress can be caused by factors such as pollution, exposure to insecticides and pesticides, electromagnetic radiation, infections, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, and even fast food. Since these factors are mostly preventable, simple lifestyle changes can improve the quality of DNA, which in turn can reduce male infertility incidents.

Regular yoga reduces oxidative stress, decreases DNA damage, and helps maintain telomere length, Dada said. The effect can be explained by increasing the concentration of certain chemicals that increase neuroplasticity. “We observed a significant decrease in seminal oxidative stress (within 21 days) and an improvement in DNA quality (6 months). There was a decrease in inflammation and normalization of sperm transcripts and maintenance of telomere length. There was also a reduction in the severity of depression, stress and anxiety scores, ”she said.

Here are some of the other benefits of yoga:

* A 2018 study by researchers at the Defense Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS) found that yoga could help prevent age-related brain degeneration in men.

* A 2017 study conducted by researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the University of Oslo, and the University of Sydney found that brain activity is increased when the person's thoughts wander freely during yoga .

* The World Health Organization (WHO) endorsed yoga in 2017, saying the ancient art can be practiced by people of all ages to help them stay fit and fight lifestyle diseases. The WHO endorsement follows the UN move two years ago when June 21 was declared International Yoga Day.

* Practicing mind-body interventions (MBIs) like meditation, yoga, and tai chi on a daily basis can reduce the risk of depression and cancer by reversing the molecular responses in DNA, suggests a study by researchers at Coventry and Radboud Universities, Great Britain, before.
