How CBD Influences the Immune System

Scientists know that the effects of cannabinoids such as CBD and THC primarily support the endocannabinoid system, which regulates immune system function and other biological functions.

The cannabinoids our body naturally produces and those found in hemp operate in similar ways to maintain balance. When cannabinoids interact with receptors in the body, they regulate and maintain biological functions, including our immune system functions. These functions are critical to maintaining homeostasis in your body.

Your Immune System

Your immune system is made up of a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that keep you healthy. Our bodies are constantly bombarded with antigens, bacteria, viruses, and infectious diseases. These intruders can knock anyone down hard or make us seriously ill. If it weren’t for our Immune system, we probably would not be here. The immune system is the body’s powerful defense mechanism that fights off these invaders from taking over and making us ill.

Defense Mechanism

The immune system’s primary function is to produce white blood cells to attack and destroy harmful invaders. These white blood cells also referred to as leukocytes, are broken into two categories. The first type of immune cells, called lymphocytes, are like soldiers on the front lines. These cells destroy antigens and build a defense memory to identify the intruder in the future. The second set of cells, known as phagocytes, neutralize and eliminate the invaders so they can no longer damage and infect you.

The immune system also has a critical role in regulating cell health by ensuring unhealthy cells do not continue to grow and become tumors. The immune system kills off malfunctioning cells in order to keep the body in good health. While phytocannabinoids such as CBD are great support tools for reducing inflammation, regulating cellular death, they have also discovered cannabinoids may be an immunosuppressant in some cases.

Cannabinoid Support

A healthy person does not need to consider using CBD for immune support. However, an ill person, specifically those with an autoimmune disorder or a hyperactive immune system, can benefit from cannabinoids found in hemp and cannabis plants. Autoimmune diseases can prevent your immune system from working properly, and Inflammation is often a contributor to autoimmune diseases. Instead of attacking harmful invaders to protect you, the body mistakenly attacks healthy cells, tissues, and organs. These attacks weaken the body and destroy healthy cells, making it vulnerable to illness, infection, and disease.

For a weak or malfunctioning immune system, cannabinoids like CBD can help regulate the immune system, bringing it back to balance and reducing inflammation so it can return to optimal function. If your body needs extra support, CBD can help you regain homeostasis and proper immune function for better health.
